Play that funky music on a Nokia 5530

Sibling rivalries heat up now that Christmas is neigh and, yes, Virginia, that includes an inadvertent race between Nokia 5530 and Nokia 5800.
Hitting the market just six months apart, and with the two models almost having similar features, the Nokia 5530 has been called the younger brother of the 5800.

That’s cute. But what consumers want to know are: Which is better in terms of value for money? Look? Capabilities?
In short, which one deserves a place underneath the Christmas tree?
Since both are Nokia XpressMusic models, many will buy either primarily for the superb sound quality. It’s a stalemate in that department because both have stereo speakers with surround sound (for that “Boom Boom Pow” aural experience).
But when it comes to the finer details, the songs in this mini “playlist” make a pitch for the Nokia 5530:
1) “Colour Everywhere” by Christian Bautista
The Nokia 5530 phone casing comes in combinations of red on black, blue on white, grey on black, pink on white and yellow on white.
The first we recommend to the hot-blooded jocks, the second to the serene scholar, the third to the Bellas, the fourth to the Hannah Montanas of this world, and the fifth to the I-think-I’m-gonna-march-down-the-streets-flashing-the-“L”-sign type.
The camera specs will have any user singing “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. The image capture is 3.2 megapixels Auto Focus while the video capture---640 x 360 pixels, or up to 16 million colors!
2)“Touch My Body”  by Mariah Carey
It’s a touch-based device so there’s no physical keyboard. Instead, a virtual numeric keypad shows on the high definition 2.9-inch display (640 x 360 pixels) when the phone is held upright. Handled horizontally on its left side and the display turns into a QWERTY keyboard.
If it’s your first time to use a touch-based phone, you may use the stylus for precision (and to minimize smudges on the phone screen).
And get this: Press on any “button” on the phone and the device quivers in response to the touch. It’s like the diva on a sensual high.
It also has proximity sensor for preventing unintended touches and for saving power. Al Gore would be proud.
3) “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” by Dionne Warwick
This song makes the list because of the opening line, “What do you get when you fall in love [with a Nokia 5530]…?”
Well, the phone itself has 70MB space. As with other phones, you can expand that support for up to 16GB of microSD memory card.
Its person-centric user interface with visualized contacts makes it easy to share media and communicate with friends. The Media Bar ensures easy access to your favorite media.
The CPU speed is RM 11 434 MHz processor. And it’s Wi-Fi capable. Has FM radio. Bluetooth. WLAN. Hi-speed USB 2.0. You know?
4) “(There’s Gotta Be) More To Life” by Stacie Orrico
And there is with the Nokia 5530. Even with just 1000mAh battery, the phone has a talk time of up to 4.9 hours and a stand by time of up to 14 days.
That means more time to gossip with friends or catch up with family. Or vice-versa.
5) “Thank You For The Music” by Abba
In the Philippines, anyone who buys a Nokia 5530 unit gets 500 credits for Universal Music mobile store.
That means FREE music and video for legitimate download. Yes, for FREE (suggestion: repeat the word several times like a mantra and feel a good vibe coming on, in the words of Miley Cyrus, “like yeah…”).
To register for an account, visit the Universal Music link then input the activation code that comes with the phone. Every song or video downloaded deducts a credit from the initial 500.
The phone can store up to 12,000 songs with optional 16GB microSD card. The music playback is up to 27 hours.
You can download songs by artists from other labels via the Nokia Music Store and Nokia Ovi Suite. Music uploads and downloads can be done through WLAN, Bluetooth and micro USB connector.

Nokia Announces US Availability of 2 New Smartphones

Nokia Announces US Availability of 2 New SmartphonesAs confirmed by Nokia, it's E72 and 5800 Navigation Edition smartphones will now be available in market across America, both will be sold unlocked and SIM free, and buyers looking to use the phone must do so with a wireless service which they will have to purchase separately from operators such as AT&T and T-Mobile.
Despite being the largest mobile phone maker and distributor in the world, Nokia's US market share is significantly less, as compared to some other competitors. With the introduction of the new phones, the company is looking to change the situation and expand more into the market.
Like most of its other smartphones, the E72 and the 5800 are based on Symbian OS.
The E72, with a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.4 inch display, supports Mail for Exchange as well as IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, in addition to up-to 10 different e-mail accounts. It also offers IM facility from the home screen directly.
The 5800 Navigation Edition, on the other hand, features real-time, turn-by-turn navigation, a touchscreen and a camera which can be used for video calls.
The E72 and 5800 Navigation Edition have been priced at $469 and $299, respectively.

With 3G, quad-band and Wi-Fi calling, RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 is best fixed QWERTY smartphone to date

Research in Motion’s BlackBerry Bold 9700 is the ultimate QWERTY BlackBerry handset.

The Bold 9700, which replaces the Bold 9000, is the product of an array of minute refinements on the flagship BlackBerry model and classic QWERTY form factor. If you’re a power user who’s addicted to the BlackBerry style (or required by corporate), this is the BlackBerry to get.

OUTSIDE
The new Bold is a visual departure from the old, which was “bold” in the sense of being large, masculine and clad in chrome and leatherette. The new 9700 is slim, smaller and has far more in common with the Curve 8520, including RIM’s new optical trackpad, which replaces the spotty rollerball. It’s a change that’s surprisingly easy to get used to.

[Image Gallery: RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 hands-on]
The 9700’s smaller, more compact profile (4.29 in. tall by 2.36 in. wide by 0.56 in. thick; 4.3 oz. in weight) means it’s actually lighter than the Tour. Compared to the Bold 9000, the new Bold 9700 actually has a smaller screen — 2.44 in. versus 2.75 in. — but the stunning 480 x 360 pixel resolution (245 ppi) means images and video playback is quite sharp and vivid. You won’t miss the 0.31 inches.
Another reason you won’t miss the lost space is because BlackBerry OS 5.0, while including welcome refinements, hasn’t changed very much to require the extra space. Changes include an easier-to-use calendar and alarm clock, as well as a few new shortcuts that make it easier to customize the device to your liking.
Most of the Bold 9700’s physical features are as you’d expect: a refined, tight (in a good way), stiff 35-key full QWERTY keyboard with raised ridges; a 3.5mm headphone jack; a microUSB port/power connector; a customizable shortcut key; another convenience key that’s the camera by default; a volume rocker; mute and lock buttons; and a camera and flash on the back side.

The upgraded camera is now 3.2 megapixels (from two) and offers zoom, auto focus, flash, video-recording and basic editing. You can also use GPS to geotag photos. I found the camera on the Bold 9700 to be well-balanced, fairly crisp and accurate in color reproduction. It won’t knock your socks off — this is a smartphone we’re talking about here — but it’s a strong contender based on what’s currently on the market.
The T-Mobile version of the handset comes with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a 2GB microSD card, a wired stereo headset and a belt holster. AT&T also offers the device.
INSIDE
The Bold 9700 is T-Mobile’s first 3G BlackBerry, with support for UMTS/HSDPA 900/1700/2100. The box proudly proclaims the device’s UMA support for Wi-Fi calls (make and receive unlimited calls over Wi-Fi without using voice plan minutes), and tucked inside is also a faster processor (624 MHz) and an updated OS.
The only major downside of the Bold 9700, and it’s a notable one, is the Web browser that comes with the operating system. Compared to other smartphones on the market, it just can’t compete in terms of functionality or usability, and while it’s relatively snappy (thanks to faster Javascript and CSS processing), it leaves you wanting more from an otherwise crisp smartphone: there’s no tabbed browsing, navigation is still the same and it just doesn’t accommodate for the way users now browse the Web.
The hardware is still formidable. The Bold 9700 offers quad-band world roaming, a speakerphone, voice-activated dialing, smart dialing, conference calling, speed dial, visual voice mail and text and multimedia messaging with threaded chat view.

The 9700 also sports background noise suppression technology, GPS, Bluetooth (mono and stereo), hands-free support, dial-up networking and serial port profile, among other features.
For those who use corporate BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), you’ll have more e-mail functionality: you can now manage e-mail folders, access remote file share and forward and view calendar appointments, all welcome changes.
With BlackBerry Internet Service, you can access up to 10 personal/business POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail accounts. There’s also an attachment viewer for opening Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Corel WordPerfect, PDF, JPEG, and GIF files. It’s supplemented by pre-loaded DataViz Documents To Go Standard, which allows you to edit Microsoft Office files.
The 9700 is preloaded with AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Yahoo, Windows Live, and BlackBerry Messenger clients. BlackBerry App World allows you to fill out your app needs, but the phone’s limited 256MB of internal memory means you don’t have oodles of space to play with. Still, there was plenty of space to install Facebook, news from the Associated Press and ZDNet’s own app.
The built-in multimedia player supports MP3, WMA, WMA ProPlus, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+ files, and MPEG4, WMV, and H.264 video clips. It’s fairly comprehensive in terms of functionality, and you can sync your personal library (including iTunes) using BlackBerry Media Sync and BlackBerry Desktop Manager software, available for Mac and PC. I found media playback to be surprisingly satisfying, but don’t expect to load your entire music library on this device, as it’s not built for it.
USABILITY
The Bold 9700 is far more “pocketable” than the previous Bold 9000 and slipped in and out of my bag rather easily. It’s pretty light as far as smartphones go, which is nice, and its edges are smooth and don’t snag on pockets.
The keyboard is one of the finest RIM has produced, and I thought the small chrome separators were a nice touch.

I tested the Bold 9700 in New York on T-Mobile. Audio was clear on both sides of the line, including during use of the speakerphone. There was a bit of tinnyness present, but I’ve found that to be a problem among most smartphones, and there was less problem with this on the Bold 9700 than on most others.
I had no problem pairing a Bluetooth headset to the Bold 9700.
Battery was rated at 6 hours of talk time and 17 days of standby time; I found that to be largely accurate, though expect your standby time to be a bit less in the real world, even if you don’t use the phone very often.
BOTTOM LINE
The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 is the best and most refined QWERTY BlackBerry ever made.
In previous posts, I’ve lamented the obvious drawbacks of the BlackBerry operating system, including clunky navigation and Web browsing, but this device isn’t built for the Apple iPhone crowd, and will never appeal to them.
With that significant point noted, the Bold 9700’s high build quality, minor usability upgrades and quality media playback will bring a smile to any classic BlackBerry fan’s face. The BlackBerry Storm2 might get the press for its departure from the classic BlackBerry formula, but the Bold 9700 is the powerful dark horse in RIM’s stable. As a fixed QWERTY handset, it won’t disappoint.

Symbian – Taking Mobile Phones Into The Future

Nokia secrets
One of the big operating systems in the world of smartphones has always been Symbian, and this year, 3 phones are aiming to take it to new heights. Let's take a look at the wonders on display...

Nokia 5800 - Nokia's first mainstream touchscreen

A couple of new phones from Nokia have brought Symbian into the world of touch; they're the first two mainstream Nokias that have touchscreens. First, we have the Nokia 5800. The 5800 doesn't have a keyboard at all, so the touchscreen and interface are vital. It's an incredible interface too, with full touch controls, and a magical user experience, letting you the most from your phone.

However, the Nokia 5800 ISN'T a top-end, uber-smartphone device. It was always meant to be a mid-tier handset, and although the Nokia 5800 is stunning, it's left a nice gap at the top of their product range for their OTHER new touch phone.

Nokia N97 - adding QWERTY into the mix

And so, say hello to the Nokia N97. It takes the Symbian touch interface, and adds a full QWERTY keyboard, a bigger display, and a huge 32Gb of storage space. There aren't many phones on the market that can beat it for sheer power, and, frankly, the word 'powerhouse' is the best way to describe for the Nokia N97.

In addition to the obvious extra benefits you get from a QWERTY keyboard, it also includes a bigger camera than the 5800, coming in at 5 megapixels. Without a doubt, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone in production at the moment. It won't stay that way, though, because another upcoming phone is definitely going to steal its thunder...

Sony Ericsson Idou - more powerful than the average country...

As things stand at the moment, the Nokia N97 is the most advanced Symbian phone you'll be able to lay your hands on, beating out its lower-end cousin, the Nokia 5800. However, it WILL be overtaken, because at the Mobile World Congress 2009, a new Sony Ericsson device was announced. And it's a monster! Called the Sony Ericsson Idou, it has the same Symbian software, but with a custom interface on top, that's more incredible than anything on Earth. Sleek animations move you between screens, and the music player, built with Walkman technology, is second to none. However, it has one, huge, not-so-secret weapon, because the Idou from Sony Ericsson is the first phone to feature a TWELVE megapixel camera. Because of that, and because of the superb interface, there's simply nothing out there that can touch (no pun intended) the Idou...

If conserving your battery life and skimping on your handset use is important to you, then the Nokia N97 could possibly the answer to your needs. The fantastic battery backup allows talk time of up to 9 h30 min (2G) and up to 6 h (3G).

If this isn’t enough to tickle your fancy, the internal 32GB memory and Wi-Fi support should make you smile.

Announced in November 2008 and released in June 2009, the Nokia N97 measures 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9mm (88cc) in size and weighs in at 150g. While not the lightest, this is a nice looking phone which is available in two colours - black or white.

It has a number of excellent features, and comes area-specific models - one for use in America, and the other for everywhere else. On 2G, it works on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and on 3G, supports HSDPA 900/1900/2100. The American version works on 3G on HSDPA 850/1900/2100.

The N97 exterior is pretty much in the Nokia shape and style, with this model featuring a TFT resistive touchscreen showing 16M colours. Displaying 360 x 640 pixels, it measures 3.5 inches and incorporates a proximity sensor for auto turn-off, an Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate when viewing alternating landscape or portrait format, a full QWERTY keyboard and handwriting recognition.

It will alert you with either vibration or MP3 ringtones, includes a stereo speaker speakerphone and a standard 3.5mm audio jack. Stereo FM radio with RDS in included, as is Visual radio and an FM transmitter.

If a large internal memory is one of your requirements the Nokia N97 may be the phone for you - it’s 32GB storage and 128 MB RAM allows you to store practically unlimited phonebook entries and fields, Photocall, and detailed call records for up to 30 days. The memory can be extended up to 16GB by means of a slot-in microSD card.

Class 32 EDGE and GPRS data handling is made possible by means of the Symbian OS v9.4, Series 60 rel 5 operating system which runs on an ARM 11 434 MHz processor. The phone offers browser capabilities in the form of WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML and RSS feeds. Messaging is possible via SMS, MMS, Email, Push Email and IM.

The 5 MP primary camera (259x1944 pixels) uses Carl Zeiss Optics, and has autofocus, LED flash and a video light. It features Geo-Tagging, enabling picture taking and uploading - an example of location based services. Video is possible through this camera at 30fps in VGA mode, and through the secondary camera at 15fps.

Yes - it does play games (N-gage plus downloadable), and yes - it also supports java (MIDP 2.1), GPS with A-GOS support, Nokia Maps and … a digital compass!

For your entertainment, the handset plays MP3/WMA/WAV/eAAC+ music files and - pleasingly - WMV/RealVideo/MP4 video player. Then there is TV-out, Voice Command and dial, and the Document Viewer supports Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files. Then too there is a video and photo editor, T9 text input and Flash Lite 3.

The extra power in the battery, enabling much longer talk and stand by time is a great plus for making the N97 a more usable Smartphone than the others.

Despite the sensual name, the iPAQ Glisten targets the business power user, with touch capability, Flash support, built-in Wi-Fi with dedicated on/off button, GPS, SMS/MMS and a full QWERTY keyboard and five-way directional pad.

Nokia N900 (unlocked)

The good: The Nokia N900 offers a powerful mobile Web browser, plenty of storage, a 5-megapixel camera, and an ultrasharp display. It's also fast, multitasks well, and has excellent call quality. Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, and GPS are all onboard.

The bad: The user interface isn't very intuitive. Ovi Store for the N900 isn't live yet, limiting the number of available apps, and it doesn't sync with Exchanger Server 2003. The phone is a bit bulky and not all apps work in portrait mode.

The bottom line: While it has yet to reach its full potential, the Nokia N900 is a powerful mobile device with excellent browsing capabilities and vast customization options. However, its unintuitive interface and other limitations make this a smartphone for tech enthusiasts and early adopters only.

The Nokia N900 is the next evolution of the company's Internet Table, and don't let its smaller size fool you. It delivers more power, adds phone capabilities, and has one of most robust mobile Web browsers on the market today. It also runs on the Linux-based Maemo platform, which offers great customization options and multitasking abilities but has yet to live up to its full possibilities. The N900 feels incomplete with its limited Exchange support and an app store that has yet to go live. Also, the user interface is incredibly unintuitive, making it frustrating to use at times. Like we said, there's plenty of potential there, but for now, the N900 is probably best for tech enthusiasts or early adopters, while those after an everyday, more mainstream smartphone should stick with the current crop of favorites. The Nokia N900 is available unlocked for $569, though you may be able to find it for less online.

Design
Aside from the slider design, the Nokia N900 bears very little resemblance to its predecessors. Instead of a tablet form factor, the N900 looks more like one of the N series smartphones, such as the N96, but is on the bulkier side at 4.37 inches wide by 2.35 inches tall by 0.77 inch thick and 6.38 ounces. In hand, the N900 feels like a very solid phone but the extra weight is noticeable when you're on a phone call and it'll make for a bit of a tight fit in a pants pocket.

The Nokia N900 is a bit on the heavier and thicker side.

There are a couple of quirks about the smartphone. First, most apps only work in landscape mode and there are very few that work in portrait mode. In fact, the only one we could find was the phone app. It's not a deal-breaker but we'd definitely like to have the option of using more apps in portrait mode. Also, there are no Talk and End keys (or any other of the standard navigation buttons), so a simple task of making a phone call requires a couple of extra steps. This wouldn't be such a huge deal if the user interface was a bit more intuitive (more on this later), but if you're using the device for the first time and trying to make a call or simply trying to return to the previous menu, it can be slightly confusing.

Without physical navigation buttons, you'll mostly use the N900's 3.5-inch resistive touch screen to get around the phone, and it is quite a beauty. The WVGA display (800x480 pixels) is amazingly sharp and bright and has an ambient light sensor and brightness controls. Also, although it's a resistive touch screen, which requires that you use a little more pressure than capacitive screens, we found it to be very responsive to our touches, whether we were opening an app, scrolling through lists, or switching between home screens.

We found the N900's QWERTY keyboard fairly easy to use, though we didn't like the off-center placement of the space key.

For text entry, you get a full QWERTY keyboard, which you can access by pushing the screen upward. There isn't much space between the keys, but the buttons are a good size and have a non-slippery texture and a slight bump to them, so most users should have no problem with the N900's keyboard. Our only complaint is that Nokia has, once again, placed the space bar off center, which interrupts the flow of typing, particularly for left-handers since it's located on the right side. We don't really understand why the company keeps doing this.

While you don't get the standard navigation array, there are some physical controls on the exterior of the smartphone. On top of the device, you'll find a volume rocker, a power button, and a camera activation/capture key. The right side holds a lock switch, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a stylus, while there's a Micro-USB port on the left. The camera and dual LED flash are located on back, both of which are protected by a sliding cover, and like the Nokia N86, there is a kickstand so you can prop up the device to watch movies or view a photo slideshow.

User interface
As we mentioned earlier, the Nokia N900's UI isn't very easy to use right out of the box, but with time and customization, it can offer a lot. Running on the Linux-based Maemo platform, the smartphone offers four home-screen panes that you can rotate through by swiping from left to right and vice versa. You can personalize each pane with various widgets and shortcuts. To do so, just press on a part of the home screen (outside of any widgets or shortcuts), and you'll see a little tab menu with a settings wheel icon drop down from the top of the screen. Pressing that will bring up another Desktop menu in which you can choose to add a shortcut, contact, bookmark, widget and also change your background or theme. There's also a Manage View option, and you can remove any of the home screens if you think four is too many. To remove any items from a pane, press the X on the right-hand corner of the widget or shortcut.

You may see one of two icons in the upper left-hand corner on each of the home panes. When you don't have any apps open, you'll see a grid icon, which when pressed, will take a main menu of apps. If you're running other programs, you will see an icon with multiple windows and this takes you to a page that shows all your running apps. From there you can switch to a different program or exit out of one, making multitasking on the N900 quite easy.

Figuring out how all the menus work and what each icon is takes time and in our experience, requires a lot of trial and error. For example, once you get deeper into a task, it's not always clear how to return to the previous page (you just tap outside the window, by the way), and a simple task like this shouldn't be so confusing. However, you learn with more use and with more time; we customized the user interface to our liking and found it quite useful, especially the multitasking window.

Accessories
The Nokia N900 comes packaged with an AC adapter, a stereo headset, video-out cables, a cleaning cloth, and reference material. For more add-ons, please check our cell phone accessories, ringtones, and help page.

Features
Though Nokia has removed "Internet Tablet" from the product name, the browsing experience still takes top billing and it's where the Nokia N900 really shines. The smartphone's browser is based on Mozilla technology and is one of the most powerful mobile browsers we've seen, displaying pages much like you would see on your desktop. It offers AJAX support and Adobe Flash Player 9.4, so you can view Flash content, such as videos or games, right from the browser. Other features of the browser include visual bookmarks, the capability to search within a page, downloads, and multiple windows, but again, finding these options isn't very intuitive. To zoom in and out of pages, you can simply use the volume rocker on top of the phone or double tap the screen. Alternatively, you can use your finger to create a little circular motion on the touch screen.

The N900 can connect over Wi-Fi and is compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network, since it supports the 900/1700/2100MHz HSDPA bands. Though the smartphone had no problem finding and connecting to our Wi-Fi network, we had some initial problems getting online using T-Mobile's 3G network. After a little research through some forums, we found that the N900 had the incorrect APN settings, so we had to go into the Connections menu and change it from internet2.voicestream.com to epc.tmobile.com. Then we were good to go.

Using T-Mobile's network here in New York, CNET's full site loaded in an impressive 15 seconds and displayed all Flash content, including CNET TV videos. Load times for video took a bit longer and the videos were a bit choppy, though still viewable, and the fact that we could even view it from the browser was amazing. That said, we had problems getting Flash games to play on the N900. Mozilla is also working on a mobile version of Firefox, which will be available first on the N900 in early 2010. A beta version is also expected by the end of 2009.

As a phone, the N900 has quad-band world roaming, a speakerphone, conference calling, speed dial (via the contacts widgets), vibrate mode, and text and multimedia messaging. There is no support for voice dialing at this time. You can make VoIP calls, however, and the N900 offers wizards for setting up your Skype, Jabber, and SIP accounts. Bluetooth (supports hands-free kits, mono and stereo headsets, audio/video remote control, file transfer, and object push) and GPS are also onboard.

The Maemo platform offers the basic productivity tools and messaging capabilities, but there are limitations. For example, while the Nokia N900 can access multiple POP3 and IMAP accounts, it currently only syncs with Exchange Server 2007 and not Exchange 2003, so we couldn't hook up our work e-mail to the smartphone, which is almost a deal-breaker. Also, while there are a number of apps and personal information management tools preloaded on the device, including Documents to Go, Nokia Maps, a PDF reader, a calendar, a calculator, and a clock, the Ovi Store for the N900 isn't officially available yet, limiting the number of apps available for download to just about a dozen through the phone's Application Manager. That said, Nokia has said it will send out an update to resolve these issues soon.

As a multimedia device, the Nokia N900 can certainly hold its own. The built-in media player supports MP3, WMA, AAC, M4A, and WAV files and displays album art and ID3 tags. You get basic shuffle and repeat modes and you can create playlists on the fly. There's also support for Internet radio and an FM tuner. (Note that you need to use the included headset for the latter.) The N900 can also play back MP4, AVI, WMV, MPEG-4, Xvid, 3GP, H.264, and H.263 video files, and includes a dedicated 3D graphics accelerator. The Nokia N900 has a whopping 32GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot (up to 16GB), so space should not be an issue here.

Picture quality was impressive.

Like a number of Nokia N series models, the N900 features a 5-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with dual-LED flash, auto focus, and video recording capabilities. There are multiple camera options, including white balance adjustment, ISO sensitivity, exposure settings, and geotagging. Picture quality was quite good. Even in a darker lit room, the N900 delivered a sharp image with decent coloring. There's also an onboard photo editor if you want to touch up your photos afterwards.

Performance
We tested the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; WCDMA 900/1700/2100) in New York using T-Mobile service and call quality was excellent. We were impressed at how crystal clear audio sounded on our end. There was absolutely no trace of background noise or voice distortion, and there was plenty of volume. Friends also had similar praises and said they couldn't tell we were calling from a cell phone. We had no problems using an airline's voice-automated system and didn't experience any dropped calls during our testing period.

Speakerphone quality was also good. Occasionally, the sound could be a bit muffled, but for the most part, we had no issues with speakerphone calls. We successfully paired the N900 with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset and the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones.

Powered by a 600MHz TI OMAP3 3430 (Cortex A8) processor, the N900 performed beautifully during our testing period. The transition between home screens was smooth and the smartphone was very responsive with minimal delays even when working in multiple applications. We loaded up a couple of MPEG-4 videos on the device and playback was smooth with synchronized audio and images, and the picture quality was particularly amazing on the N900's sharp display. With the 3.5mm jack, we were also able to plug in our Bose On-Ear Headphones and enjoy rich-sounding music.

The Nokia N900 features a 1320mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 9 hours (GSM)/5 hours (3G). We are still conducting our battery drain tests but will update this section as soon as we have final results. According to FCC radiation tests, the N900 has a digital SAR rating of 0.92 watt per kilogram.

Prepaid Mobile Boosted By Smartphones

Consumers who want prepaid phones are no longer restricted to low-tech devices, as smartphones are increasingly becoming available on prepaid plans, according to a survey of mobile handsets announced by the New Millennium Research Council.

"The bottom line is that prepaid no longer means low tech," said Allen Hepner, executive director of NMRC, in a statement Thursday. "One of the biggest raps on prepaid phone service was that the phones were behind the state-of-the-art handsets."

Hepner noted that many consumers, particularly those oriented toward text and Web-surfing use, now have an impressive lineup of leading edge handsets to choose from. He added that the new wave of advanced phones for prepaid plans is likely to generate a new wave of users, particularly as the U.S. economy remains under pressure.

NMRC cited a range of phones offered by carriers and retail chains like Wal-Mart that feature the low price of prepaid service plans combined with phones with advanced features and technologies. As an example, NMRC pointed to the Samsung Intensity handset offered by Verizon Wireless. The device has a 1.3-megapixel camera, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a microSD card, and access to VCAST. T-Mobile, Boost Mobile, and other providers also offer advanced phones with prepaid plans.

Another entry in the prepaid category offering an advanced phone is the Wal-Mart-branded Straight Talk family

The market research firm noted that several consumer-oriented organizations including Consumer Reports have predicted the success of prepaid plans, which have opened up as the U.S. recession has continued to take its toll

Nokia 5730 XpressMusic

The Nokia 5730 is one of the first feature phones available with QWERTY. This music phone which is essentially an E75 in disguise hits the right note among music lovers looking for an enhanced messaging experience. Being the first dedicated music phone with QWERTY, the expectations are high. But the 5730 carries off the weight of expectations well, delivering users with little to groan about.

Design and Looks

The styling of the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic is very similar to the 5630; with the distinctive red or blue frame around the front and the dot-matrix font alphanumeric keypad below the display, but slide out the QWERTY and you are presented with a wholly new phone. Strangely the 5630 has not made it to India yet, so the 5730’s styling should be as new to users as QWERTY is to feature phones.
